Award for Renovation of the Building in Jēkaba 2, Riga

March 07, 2018

BlueOrange participated in the major competition in the Latvian construction industry “The Latvian Construction Industry Annual Award 2017” and received an award in the category “Renovation” for successful restoration of the building in Jēkaba 2, Riga.

“Thanks to contributions from the building owners, this historic building in the heart of Old Riga has undergone the largest ever restoration in its centuries-long history. We are happy with the result. The building in Jēkaba 2 has not only been preserved, but also beautifully restored to its former splendour, complementing the magnificent architectural ensemble at the Dome Square. At the same time, we have managed to implement our goal – to create a modern, highly technological and comfortable bank office space behind the historical façade, housing bank employees and the BlueOrange Client Service Centre, which opened its doors last summer”, the customer’s project managers Marina Zaharova and Jurijs Jansons comment.

The building’s magnificent façade has been fully restored and painted in its original colour, a pale cerulean hue that makes the decorative elements stand out more. The first ever reinforcement of the building’s foundation has been carried out, which is of particular importance in the historical centre of Old Riga. Construction works have also been accompanied by archaeological supervision, improving our knowledge about the history of this grand structure. Restoration of windows and doors as well as reconstruction of the entire utility system have been carried out with particular care; an elevator has been installed in the interior yard of the building, providing access to all storeys.

The almost forgotten heritage from the year 1893 remains with just three elements that have been restored with utmost care, thus preserving historical evidence for future generations. Over the course of numerous reconstruction projects, the Jēkaba 2 edifice has retained its plain concrete staircase with metal railings, which goes from the first floor to the attic, as well as its splendid glazed tile stove and the ornate oak ceiling in the hall that historically served as the bank director’s office.

The old town charm and high-tech are the keywords to describe the concept of the building reconstruction. Using a house protected by UNESCO and located in the historical centre of Riga, and transforming it into a contemporary, innovative and functional office building that meets the requirements of financial institutions was truly a challenge that was successfully implemented.
